What arrives in the crate

Everything between the battery and your final circuits, mounted, wired, labelled and routed through trunking.

Victron board we fitted in the locker of a Carthago motorhome, with a MultiPlus-II inverter charger, SmartSolar MPPT, Orion XS DC-DC charger, battery switch and Lynx Power In on blue shelves
One of our boards, fitted in the locker of a customer's Carthago motorhome. Layout varies with the system and your van.
  1. Victron inverter/charger230V from the battery when you are off-grid, and a battery charger with automatic changeover when you plug in.
  2. Main battery fuse and DC distributionThe Class T main battery fuse is fitted on the board, and the battery tails we supply connect to it. For a 12V battery up to 200Ah, an MRBF fuse comes loose in the kit to fit next to the battery. A Lynx Distributor feeds the fused DC outputs, all sized to your battery.
  3. Orion XS DC-DC chargerCharges the leisure battery from the alternator as you drive, and keeps the starter battery separate.
  4. SmartSolar MPPT controllerThe 100/50 on every system, so there is headroom for a second panel later.
  5. Cerbo GX and touchscreenOne screen for the whole system, and the link to VRM for remote monitoring.
  6. SmartShunt 500AMeasures what goes in and out of the battery, so the state of charge you see is accurate.
  7. Isolation and AC protectionBattery and solar isolators. The 230V side has two metal consumer units with double-pole RCBOs. One is on the MultiPlus AC input and one is on its AC output.
  8. Labelled cables in trunkingEvery cable tagged at both ends, to match the drawing you get with the board.
  9. Battery cables that plug straight onThe battery cables are made up on the bench and plug straight onto the battery. The battery itself ships separately.
  10. Wiring diagram and risk assessmentsEvery board ships with its wiring diagram. It also comes with risk assessments for fitting it and for the first power-up.

Settings entered, not left to you

A lot of the problems we are asked to look at on self-built systems come down to settings. So your board leaves with them entered.

Charge settings for your battery are entered on the inverter/charger, the Orion XS and the solar controller, with the DC-DC input current set to suit your alternator.

The Cerbo GX talks to the battery over CAN with DVCC switched on, so every charger follows the battery’s own limits.

The SmartShunt is set to your battery, and the system is ready to add to your VRM account on the day it goes live.

Testing and certification

Tested on the bench. Verified in the van.

BS 7671 applies in full to the electrical installation in your van, and Section 721 adds requirements for caravans and motor caravans. A board on its own has no final circuits, so it cannot be given an Electrical Installation Certificate.

We test each board up to and including the consumer units, because no final circuits are connected yet. We inspect it first, then carry out the dead tests that apply at that stage: continuity of protective conductors, insulation resistance and polarity on the board wiring. The 230V side gets the tests in IET Guidance Note 3. The 12V side is inspected to BS EN 1648-2 and Annex A721. Functional testing of the switchgear and the Victron kit comes last. The results go in the crate with the board.

Once the board is fixed in and the final circuits are connected, the complete installation needs initial verification, with dead and live tests. We only issue an Electrical Installation Certificate when we fit the whole system ourselves. If you fit the board yourself, you can book an EICR inspection with us once the van is finished.

Layout and options

Wall board or compact stack

Wall board. One flat board that sits close to the van wall. Standard on every system, and the only layout for Scafell Pike.

Compact stack. The same system on panels stacked in a tighter footprint, for under-seat or wardrobe spaces. Add £795 on Catbells and Blencathra, or £1,095 on Helvellyn.

Questions

Pre-built system questions

What is a pre-built campervan electrical system?

It is a complete Victron system, mounted and wired on a board in our workshop before it reaches you. The inverter/charger, DC-DC charger, solar controller, monitoring, distribution and protection are already connected, labelled and set up. In the van, the work comes down to fixing the board and making the final connections.

What is left to do when the board arrives?

Fix the board securely, fit the battery and plug its cables on. The Class T main battery fuse is already on the board, with the battery tails connected to it. If your kit includes an MRBF fuse (12V, batteries up to 200Ah), fit it next to the battery, close to its positive terminal, first. Then connect the alternator feed, the solar cable, the hook-up inlet and your final circuits (sockets, lights, pump and so on). The whole installation then needs initial verification before it is put into use. If you would rather we did all of that, we fit systems at our Cumbria workshop.

Can you issue an Electrical Installation Certificate for a pre-built board?

No. An EIC covers an installation, and a board on its own has no final circuits. BS 7671 applies in full to the finished van, and Section 721 adds requirements for caravans and motor caravans. We inspect and test the board on the bench, up to and including the consumer units, and send the results with it. We only issue an EIC when we fit the whole system ourselves. If you fit the board yourself, you can book an EICR with us once the van is finished.

Which system do I need?

Start with the biggest 230V appliance you want to run and how long you stay off hook-up. Catbells suits weekends and small loads, Blencathra longer trips, Helvellyn gas-free cooking on induction, and Scafell Pike full-time living and heavy loads. On a free 30-minute call we check your loads, your alternator and the space you have.

Can I change the components or the layout?

Yes. Common changes are a bigger battery, a different GX screen, extra solar or a compact stacked layout instead of a single wall board. We price any change before we build, and it goes on your drawing.

Will it work with a smart alternator on a Euro 6 van?

Yes. The Orion XS detects when the engine is running without an extra wire, so it suits smart alternators. We set its input current to suit your alternator before the board ships.

Is the system set up before it ships?

Yes. Charge settings for your battery are entered on the inverter/charger, DC-DC charger and solar controller. The Cerbo GX is linked to the battery with DVCC switched on, the battery monitor is set to your battery and the system is ready to add to your VRM account.

What support do I get after handover?

12 months of VRM support, where we can see your system remotely with your permission and help with settings and faults. You also get lifelong membership of our WhatsApp Community, and direct support from us where it is needed.

Do the prices include VAT and the battery?

Yes, every price on this page includes VAT, and the headline price includes the battery. If you already have a suitable battery, the board alone starts at £3,429. Solar panels, a hook-up inlet and the alternator cable kit are optional extras.

How does a pre-built system compare with having it fitted?

A fitted system covers the wiring of the whole van as well as the board. In our Cumbria workshop, the Compact 1200VA install is from £6,095, including labour of about £2,395, and the Gasless 3kVA install is from £7,895, including labour of about £2,994.

Ready to pick your fell?

Choose one of the four boards and we build it for your van. Or we can fit the whole system at our Cumbria workshop. Not sure which? Call us and we will check your loads, your alternator and your space.
